Obituary of Maria Elizabeth Heidt

MARIA ELIZABETH HEIDT (Gross) October 27, 1924 " November 2, 2007 Maria (Mary) Heidt, beloved wife of Johannes (John) Heidt, was raised in Georgental, a German community in the Ukraine. Her early life was disrupted by Stalinist Communism and World War II. In 1944 her family escaped to West Germany. She and John Heidt were married in Germany in 1948. Their only daughter Valerie was born in Germany and the family moved to Regina in 1950. They spent three years in Trinidad from 1959 to 1962 while John was involved in the construction of a Hilton Hotel. Valerie married Michael Hartney of Moose Jaw in 1972 and they have resided in Calgary ever since. Mary was a wonderful loving mother and grandmother as well as an exemplary life mate to her spouse John who passed away in December of 1988. Unfortunately, Mary contracted Alzheimers but notwithstanding this terrible disease, she remained pleasant and cheerful throughout her declining years. Her courage was remarkable. She never complained, and for so long as she was able, remained a cheerful loving mother and grandmother. She never lost her dignity. Mary will be missed by her family and friends, especially her daughter, Valerie (Mike) and granddaughters, Bridget (Toby Weickert) and Laura (fianc Grant Winter); her sister, Gundi (Hans) Baumann; brothers, Joe (Edith) Gross, and Peter (Ursula) Gross; as well as many nieces, nephews and their children. Thanks to her family and staff at Parkside for their loving care. Prayers will be held on Monday, November 5, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. in Little Flower R. C. Church, 420 College Avenue with Rev. Bill Mahoney officiating. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park. Flowers are graciously declined. Donations may be made, in memoriam, to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan Inc., #301 " 2550 " 12th Avenue, Regina S4P 3X1.
