Obituary of Hendrik Rutgert Don

DON " Hendrik Rutgert (Henk). Mr. Don passed away peacefully at home on February 25, 2008. He was born March 29, 1915 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Adriana Johanna (Jenny) in 2001, his son, Martin Don and his wife, Jannet, in 1989, his step-daughter, Johanna (Jenny) Saunders, in 1999. He leaves to mourn his son, Christiaan Don (Sharon), daughter, Kathleen Don (Daryl Wightman) of Calgary, son-in-law, Gerald Saunders of Calgary, grandchildren, Christopher Don, Geoffrey Don (Amanda), Michael Don, Martin Don (Sheri-Lee), Ingrid Don, Adriana Don of Edmonton, Randall Saunders (Madonna) Field, BC, Doug Saunders and Erin Francis (Andrew) of Calgary, great-grandchildren, Ryan, Zoe and Bryce Saunders, Jesse and Nicholas Francis, Colton and Taylor Don. Mr. Don was a member of the Dutch Marine Corp. during the second war and a forced labourer in Leipzig until the end of the war. His courage and determination had a great deal to do with his survival. He made his way home on foot in April of 1945 and married his wife, Jenny, on February 6, 1946. Henk and Jenny, emigrated to Canada with their young family in April 1955. He was the owner and proprietor of Dutch Upholsterers until his retirement in 1980. He enjoyed a long retirement and the time he was able to spend with his family. He will be remembered for his gentle manner, his very dry sense of humour and his generosity. He will be greatly missed by us all. At Mr. Dons request, there will be a cremation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests no flowers, however a donation may be made to your favourite charity, if you wish.
