Obituary of Mary Bernice McEwen

MARY BERNICE BERNIE? McEWEN March 12, 1919 - September 17, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother Bernie McEwen. She was predeceased by her loving husband Mel; her parents Freeman and Inez Hamilton; her brother Wesley Hamilton; and sister Zelma Timmerman. Bernie is survived by her son Bob (Pat); granddaughters Angie (Art) Kwade and Alison McEwen; grandson Jeff McEwen (Meagan); and two adoring great grandchildren Bryton and Georgia Kwade. Mom was born in Eston, Saskatchewan and lived in Vancouver, Calgary and finally in Regina with the love of her life Mel. Bernie and Mel loved to be with friends and family, they enjoyed many trips to Hawaii and loved to spend time camping with their travel trailer. Another love was their cottage at Kedleston Gospel Camp. It was there that they spent countless hours devoting their time to help the camp grow into the facility it is today. After Mom lost her life partner Mel, she continued to travel with friends. She set sail on an Alaska Cruise, visited Israel and parts of the Middle East as well as numerous trips to Calgary to visit her granddaughters. Bernie and Mel spent many hours with their grandchildren, swimming at the lake, planting gardens and enjoying McEwen Family barbeques. The grandchildren kept them busy with hockey, football, baseball, soccer, basketball and volley ball games, piano recitals and weekend sleepovers. Mom loved to celebrate milestones such as graduations, convocations, Angies wedding and the birth of her two great-grandchildren. The last year was difficult for Mom but she truly enjoyed our outings, with a stop at McDonalds for her strawberry banana smoothie then off to the park to feed the geese or walk through the flower garden. Mom spent her last four years at Precious Memories Villas, a wonderful home where she spent many hours on the deck admiring the trees and landscape. This became her home and she loved the staff and residents, making many new friendships. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Precious Memories for their care and compassion of Mom. The family would like to give a very special thank you to Diane Neale (Neale Elder Support Services) for her devotion and support of Mom over the last four years. As well, a special thanks to the EMS, emergency room staff and nursing staff on 4D at the Pasqua Hospital for your caring and compassion in Moms last days. A Celebration of Bernies Life will be held at Regina Apostolic Church, 808 Assiniboine Avenue East, Regina, SK on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Merv Switzer officiating. There will be a private family interment at Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donation in memoriam may be made to Kedleston Gospel Camp, 808 Assiniboine Avenue East, Regina, SK, S4V 0K6.
