Helen was born in Regina on March 18th, 1917, to Milan and Annie Skerlton, who had immigrated to Canada from the Banat region of Austria-Hungary, which is present day Serbia. She attended Wetmore Public School, and later Balfour Technical Institute. She lived through the dirty thirties?, and developed a strength of character, and a hard work ethic, like many people who came through this era of Saskatchewan history. She was athletic, excelling at baseball and basketball. She loved taking the train to Lumsden for cross country skiing excursions with the Regina Ski Club. Later in life, she enjoyed curling and playing darts with the Regina Sergeants Garrison Mess. Helen was well known in the legal/judicial circles of Regina, having worked for the RCMP, various law firms, and as a Court Reporter for the City of Regina, where she retired in 1982. She continued working for a few years with Brown and Associates, until the age of 72, when she decided to hang up her typewriter once and for all. Mom was a strong, hard working woman who sacrificed much for the comfort and well being of her family. She was the backbone of our family unit. Indeed, she has been a tough act to follow. Mom had a favourite toast that she would say, a line of Serbian taught to her from her parents. As we lifted our glasses, she would say Laku Noc?, which translates into Good Night?. In honour of your hard work and dedication to your family, and as you go to be with your parents, brothers, and sisters, we lift our glasses to you, Helen, and with much love and gratitude, say Laku Noc?. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers at Parkside Extendicare who helped care for Helen. The compassion and love that you showed, as well as the professional attitude to your work, were greatly appreciated by Helen and her family.
