Obituary of David Hillbom

DAVID HILLBOM November 1, 1943 September 26, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave after a lengthy illness. Dave attended school in Wynyard, SK. He spent a year at the UBC studying architecture. He completed his education degree in Saskatoon at the U of S. Dave taught woodworking and drafting in Lampman, Lanigan, and various schools in Saskatoon, retiring from Marion Graham High School. While teaching he also did maintenance work for Nicholson Brother Properties in Saskatoon. He came out of retirement to continue teaching at Piapot First Nation near Regina, and stayed there until his health started to deteriorate. Dave was involved in Scouts at an early age. He enjoyed trips with his scouting group, a highlight being a trip to the Grand Canyon. Dave loved woodworking and enjoyed seeing the end result. He was very meticulous and crafted many beautiful projects. Dave was a jack of all trades it was rare to find anything he couldnt fix. He was easygoing, kind hearted, and humble. Dave was quiet natured, friendly and had a good sense of humour. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed the times he spent at the lake. Dave enjoyed playing cards, spending time with his family. He was an avid reader, He was very practical and lived simply. Dave and Marlene were married for 46 years. They spent many summers at the lake and enjoyed going for walks. Daves health started to deteriorate 10 years ago. He was later diagnosed with ALS. Dave battled through his illness with a great deal of fortitude and a strong will to live. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Dave is survived by his loving wife, Marlene; daughter Lisa Herdzik (Tony) and their children Melissa and Zach; son Cory and his children Mackenzie, Morgan and Brandon; his siblings Betty-Ann Shalkowsky (Ed), Dennis (Marilyn), and Bob (Colleen); as well as many extended family members. Special thanks to the nursing and support staff in the Respiratory Care Unit on 6F at Regina General Hospital for their care and support, as well as the staff at Wascana Rehab (unit 2-6). Also thanks to Dr. Abdulla for overseeing Dads care. A Memorial Service will take place at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memoriam to the ALS Society of Saskatchewan, 90 C Cavendish Street, Regina, SK, S4N 5G7.
