Obituary of Hugh Hogarth Smith

HUGH HOGARTH SMITH ~ SMITTY? July 10, 1928 September 28, 2012 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hugh Smitty? after a short stay in the hospital. Smitty is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Doreen; daughters Barbara (Doug) Walman and Beverley (Manfred) Brittner; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and a devoted sister, Barbara Graham. Smitty was raised in Toronto, Ontario and joined the RCMP on February 20, 1947. He had a wonderful career that spanned over 20 years and was stationed at Saskatoon, Bigger, Kindersley, Tisdale, Humboldt, Yorkton, Ituna, Wadena and retired from Regina detachment in August 1970. Smitty met Doreen while stationed in Humboldt and they married on October 4, 1952. After retirement from the RCMP, Smitty worked at the Bank of Canada (1971-1989). Smitty and Doreen built a summer home at Marean Lake and spent many happy summers there with kids, extended family and friends. Smitty was an avid volunteer with a strong sense of civic duty and pride. He spent untold hours working for and earning his designations as: Life Member of the RCMP Veterans Association, Life Member of the Regina Maple Leaf Lions Club and a Life Member of the Regina Council of the Blind. He also served on the Strata Council for Marian Grande Condo Association. He is greatly missed by family, friends and the community that he served. He loved his family, friends, buddies, the RCMP and a good story or a well told joke. He laughed and loved easily and will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. A celebration of a life well lived will be held at the RCMP Chapel, Regina, SK on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Officers Mess.
