Obituary of Phyllis Irene Johns

JOHNS - A beloved and valued long-time resident of Regina, Phyllis Irene (Childs) Johns, peacefully passed away at Sunset Extendicare on July 31, 2008, with family and her dear friend, Winn Wiley, at her side. Age 96, Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Philippa (Lidstone) and Fredrick Childs, husband G.W.C. Johns, brother Arthur Childs, and daughter-in-law Marnie (Smyth) Johns. She is survived by her half brother Bob Childs (Sandra); four children: George, Carol Zakaib (Stephen), Ken (Mona), Lawrie (Barbara); grandchildren: Steve (Connie Chaulk), Carolyn (Joanne McLeod), Kelly, Kristen (Sheri Crunk), Kevin, Brian; two great granddaughters, Catherine & Michelle Maier; sister-in-law Norma Johns and her family; and godson Fred Ellis (Jean), all of whose lives were strengthened and enriched by Phyllis' unfailing love, support and generosity. Like many women of her generation, Phyllis devoted her life to her many friends, her church, her community, and especially her cherished family. She was a woman of unflinching integrity, steadfast honesty and modesty, and gentle, sustaining humanity. She asked little of others, but gave bounteously of herself. The candle that Phyllis kept alight all of her long gracious life warmed and brightened the lives of all who knew her, and will remain a guiding spirit for her family and friends. The decency and goodness of this special woman and her selfless compassion made the world a better place for many people. The family of Phyllis is deeply grateful to the superb staff at Qu'Appelle House, the solicitous care of the staff at Sunset Extendicare, Dr. Joanne McLeod, Barbara Hale, and Dr. Dennis MBanza who watched over her health and welfare, and special family friend Kathleen McCrone. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Contributions to Qu'Appelle House, 1425 College Avenue, Regina, SK, S4P 1B4; or The Family Support Group of Extendicare Sunset Inc., 260 Sunset Drive, Regina, SK S4S 2S3; or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
