Obituary of Winnifred Marjorie Newman

NEWMAN - Winnifred (Freda) Marjorie, late of Regina, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2008 at the age of 93. Freda was predeceased by her husband Lloyd in 1982; her parents William and Elizabeth Freeman; and brother Fred. She is survived by her children: William (Carol) Newman of Calgary AB and their children; Susan Newman and son Kai, of Ottawa ON; Doug (Lori) Newman of Ottawa ON; Zane and children Nina and Jake, of Ottawa ON; David (Krista) Carroll, children Jamie, Seamus and Avery of Calgary AB; and Tara Carroll of Calgary AB; also survived by daughter Claire (Ken) Eberts of Regina SK and their children Derrek (Eva) Eberts of Brandon MB, and Chrissy (Craig) Popescu of Regina SK; her sister Doris of Ottawa ON; best friend Margaret Thomas; honorary adopted daughter Terre Seibel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Freda was born in London, England on July 2, 1915. At the age of 16 she received an art scholarship which subsequently lead to a career designing costumes for the Windmill Theatre in London as well as several notable British films. She married Lloyd in London and came to Canada as a war bride in 1945, on a ship with another 200 war brides. She landed in Halifax and took the train to Regina. In the 1950's she had a puppet show on CKCK TV called "Peter and Pooch. During these years she travelled extensively in Saskatchewan giving puppet shows with her puppet show partner Shirley Fraser. Freda also taught crafts to children at the YWCA, volunteered at the Regina Public Library teaching for the literacy program and was presented with an award from the City of Regina for her volunteer efforts. In the 1960's Freda began to paint again and became a member of the Regina Federation of Artists. She sold many paintings across Canada and has one at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa. Freda was a very talented lady who always took the time to enjoy her family and friends. In her later years, she travelled world wide, mostly with her best friend Margaret. We would like to thank the staff of the Pasqua Hospital and Jennifer and the rest of the staff at Broadway Terrace for all their wonderful care given in the last few months. A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2008 AT 11:00 A.M. AT WESLEY UNITED CHURCH, 3913 Hillsdale Street with Rev. John Haas officiating.
