Obituary of James Ross Crighton

CRIGHTON, James Ross (Jim) October 13, 1929 - October 26, 2008 It is with great sadness that the family of Jim Crighton announce his passing at the age of 79 years after a brief illness. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 50 years Cynthia (nee Brinkworth); daughters Sandy (Doug Scott) of Regina and Janice (Daniel Bourgeois) of Barrie, Ontario; grandchildren Stephanie, Grahame, Rene, and Zacharie; sisters June Butz and Margaret Campbell; brothers Victor, Ken, Bruce, and Bob; sisters-in-law Deanna Crighton and Joyce Blake; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim is predeceased by his parents, Jim and Margaret; his brother Don; sisters-in-law Lil and Joyce Crighton; brothers-in-law Gus Butz and Jim Brinkworth; and mothers and father-in law, Edith, Muriel, and Harry Brinkworth. Jim had a distinguished career in the insurance industry, twenty-six years of which were spent as an executive officer with SGI. He was active in the co-operative and credit union movements, serving on the Board of Directors of Credit Union Central (1992-2002), the Co-operative Trust Company of Canada (2000-2001), and the CUMIS Group of Companies (1994-2000) where he also briefly served as acting CEO in 1998. Jim was active in the formation of the PAGE Credit Union in 1981 and served on its Board of Directors for many years, including several terms as President. Until his passing, he continued in the volunteer spirit by spending one day a week at the Regina General Hospital. Jim was a life-long learner and excelled at anything he put his mind to. He enjoyed gardening and cooking; was a skilled carpenter, plumber, and electrician; and produced fine quality stained glass. "Mr. Fix-it" came to the rescue of many of us over the years and was "Making It Right" long before Mike Holmes made it fashionable. Most importantly, Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle; and a dependable friend and neighbour. A Memorial Gathering to celebrate Jim's life will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. in Speers Family Centre, 2333 Cornwall Street, Regina. Friends so wishing may make donations in memoriam to the charity of their choice. An online book of condolences may be signed at www.speersfuneralchapel.com
