Obituary of Richard Mahara

MAHARA , RICHARD - After a long life, well lived, Richard (Dick) Mahara passed away at the age of 96 years on Sunday, September 17, 2006. Born June 12, 1910 in Morecambe, Alberta, Dick is survived by his two daughters - Sharon (Cliff) Penner of Moose Jaw, SK and Sandra Train of Sidney, BC; six grandchildren: Lori (Marcel) Durand, Okotoks, AB; Linda (Dan) Prefontaine, Burley, Idaho; Gordon Penner, Brooks, AB; Ryan Penner, Calgary; AB; Brian Train, Victoria, BC and Lesley Anne Train, Sidney, BC; ten great-grandchildren; and brother Nicholas Mahara of Ottawa, ON. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Eileen (Stuhr) in 1991; sister Mary (1977); brother William (1972); and his parents Samuel and Mary. Dick spent all his working life in the bus transportation business and was recognized as a pioneer of the industry by several associations. Most notable was his induction into the Transportation Hall of Fame in 1994. His bus career started in North Battleford in the 1930s before moving to Regina in 1946 where he was instrumental in the birth of Saskatchewan Transportation Company. After 20 years with STC, his career then took him to Winnipeg, Calgary, Kitimat and across Canada and the northern United States. He also enjoyed 50 plus years of fellowship with the Masons and Shriners. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina. Flowers are most gratefully declined.
