Obituary of John Joseph O'Donoghue

O Donoghue, John J. August 23, 1918 to January 19, 2007 After a long illness. Beloved husband of 64 years to Etta. Will be greatly missed by his children Frank (Audrey) of Dublin Ireland, Etta (Christy) Monahan of Dublin Ireland, Irene (John) Robinson of Regina, and Paul (Sheila) of Windsor Ontario. Survived by his brother Gerald of Dublin, and by thirteen grandchildren and one great grandson. Predeceased by his parents Patrick and Kathleen, and by his brothers Patrick, Kevin, Francis, and Tadgh and sisters May, Rita, and Kathleen. John was born in the town of Hospital, Ireland and attended the National University of Ireland, receiving his Bachelor of Commerce and achieving his Master of Arts Summa Cum Laude in Economics in the 1940s. He worked as an economist, in industrial relations, and in pension administration in Dublin, Montreal, Ottawa, and Regina. He had a lifelong interest in politics in Ireland and Canada. Keeping politicians in check through phone - in radio and letters to the editor gave him great satisfaction! His fluency in Spanish and his concern for people led him to assist the Chilean refugees who came to Regina in the early 1970s. He was a well regarded university lecturer in the field of Irish literature, particularly the works of James Joyce. His love of Ireland led to his co-founding the South Saskatchewan Irish Club. Visitation for family and friends on Monday January 22 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Martins R. C. Church, 4720 Castle Road, Regina on Tuesday January 23 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Thomas Nguyen presiding and Father Michael Hogan concelebrating. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park.
