Obituary of Douglas Frederick George Stevens

STEVENS - Douglas Frederick George Stevens (Doug) of Regina, and formerly of Estevan, passed away January 22, 2007 at the age of 62. He died of a heart attack. Pre-deceased by his parents Raymond and Freda, Doug (Dougie as he was called by his relatives), will be fondly remembered by his Aunts Barbara and Mary, his three cousins, Alex, Lynn and Pam, and the many friends and acquaintances he made during his interesting life. After graduating from high school in Estevan, Doug attended the University of Regina, where he received a Bachelor of Arts, Honours, in Public Administration and European History in 1967. Doug then headed east to Ontario to enter graduate school at Carleton, in Ottawa, where he received his Masters degree in Political Science and International Studies in 1969. Doug then headed back to the homeland in Saskatchewan where he began work for the Saskatchewan Government as a Research and Planning Analyst in the Department of Health. In 1972 Doug moved over to the Department of Health, where he was part of the team that developed the first Occupational Health and Safety Program in North America. Not satisfied with his already substantial contributions to public policy in the Government of Saskatchewan, Doug accepted a job as a Senior Analyst with the Department of Finance. Doug worked at the Department of Finance until the end of 1981, when he decided to take a position as a Senior Advisor within the Public Service Commission. Doug worked at the Public Service Commission until 1983, when he decided to further his academic endeavors at the University of Toronto, in the PHD program, within the Department of Political Science. Doug focused his studies on public administration and Canadian studies, but his thesis topic dealt with the Crown Corporation as a problem in organizational design. In 1988 he received his PHD and his thesis was published. Once again Doug headed back to the familiar surroundings of Saskatchewan, where he took up residence in Regina. He started a fax advertising business called Fax Direct in 1992. Through Fax Direct Doug created a network of associates across Western Canada, who counted on his mastery of databases, to target specific advertising to specific customers. Doug operated Fax Direct right up to his death. Dougs greatest love was cars. He always drove classic cars and had in recent years, begun restoring classics for resale. Doug also loved to travel and during the 1980s he traveled to many countries, including his favourite country, Jamaica. He was also an avid reader and loved to do crossword puzzles. Many a day you could catch Doug on the patio of the Copper Kettle, his favourite hangout, having coffee and doing a puzzle. We will miss Dougs loyal friendship, his substantial intellect, the fact that he always dared to be different, and most of all his great humanity. He was a man in full. We invite all those who knew Doug, to celebrate his life on Friday, February 2, 2007 at the Copper Kettle Restaurant, 1953 Scarth Street at 7:00 p.m. An online book of condolences may be signed at www.speersfuneralchapel.com
