Obituary of Margaret Alexandra Whittick

WHITTICK - On February 4th, 2007, Sandra (Margaret Alexandra) Whittick completed her lifes journey in her home in Regina. It was a journey that started on November 5th, 1913 in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she grew up the second youngest of six children. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh with first class honours in English, and then trained as a teacher. She married John Whittick, and put professional teaching aside while she raised three children. The family emigrated to Regina in 1957, where she became very actively involved in the community through the University Womens Club, and, with her children, in the Regina Riding Club. After the death of her husband, John, in 1963, Sandra re-launched her teaching career in Regina, inspiring a love of language, literature and the arts in students at Marion High School, Campion College and at the Faculty of Education, University of Regina, from which she retired Professor Emeritus in 1981. The Mackenzie Art Gallery became a major focus of her later life, and she shared both her teaching talents and her knowledge of and appreciation for art with both elementary school students and Gallery volunteers. In 1998, she was very happy to find a new home for the Whittick Collection of English Studio Pottery at the Mackenzie Art Gallery. Sandra will be greatly missed by her loving family and her wide circle of friends in Regina and elsewhere. She is survived in Regina by her son, John, daughter-in-law, Susan, beloved grandchildren Duncan (Tara) and Heather (Rob), and the remaining members of her adopted Regina family. Sandra is also survived by a daughter, Jill (Dave), grandchildren Jeff and Christine, a son, Jeremy, grandchildren Andy and Janet, and several great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby, (Scotland), brother, George (New Zealand), and many nephews and nieces. Sandra appreciated very much the kind and dedicated care she received from Dr. Doug Hunter and the caregivers from both Dove HomeCare and Palliative Care. Our family is grateful to you all for the emotional and physical support which allowed Sandra to remain in her own home, where she could watch the changing seasons in her garden. At Sandras request, her ashes will be "tucked in beside her beloved husband, John, in Courtney, British Columbia. The Whittick family would like to invite those whose lives have been touched by Sandra to a gathering of friends at the Mackenzie Art Gallery on Monday, February 19th at 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandras memory to the Mackenzie Art Gallery, 3475 Albert Street, Regina S4S 6X6 or the Regina Symphony Orchestra, 200 Lakeshore Drive, S4P 3V7, would be much appreciated.
