HILL - Bessie Pettigrew (nee Shanks) September 15, 1920 - March 24, 2007 The family is saddened to announce that our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away peacefully following a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Reuben, in 1996; her parents Angus and Christine Shanks; her brothers: John Shanks and Bill Shanks; her sisters: Margaret Cameron, Christine Webster, Jean Patience, and Janet Traquair. She is survived by her son Robert (Marilyn) Hill, granddaughter Robyn (Tracy) Preete, and two great grandchildren Austen and Mikayla Preete all of Lumsden. She is also survived by her brother Alex (Colleen) Shanks of Moose Jaw; brother-in-law Charlie Patience of Bethune; sister-in-law Shirley Shanks of Port Alberni, BC; her brother-in-law Wes (Polly) Hill of Regina; several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. Bessie was born and raised in the Lumsden area and attended Ayr, Vanceborough and Lumsden schools. Following high school she attended Normal school in Regina where she obtained her teachers certificate. She taught at Reynoldton school (near Tregarva) where she met her husband Reuben. They were married in 1943. Together they farmed in the Lumsden/Tregarva area. Bessie enjoyed living on the farm. In 1956 they moved into the town of Lumsden. She was a very good cook and was always happy to have family and friends over to share food and a good game of cards. She was active in St. Andrews United Church serving in many capacities over the years; she was also active in the community in a variety of ways for many years. The family would like to thank the Nurses, Doctors, and Social Worker at Pasqua Hospital ICU for their medical care and compassion. They would also like to thank Kathy Reimer for the special care she gave to Bessie. As well, the family appreciates the prayers and support from family and friends at this difficult time. A Celebration of Bessies life will be held at St. Andrews United Church on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jamie Bushell officiating. If friends so wish, donations in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Lumsden and District Heritage Home, Box 479, Lumsden, SK S0G 3C0 or St. Andrews United Church Memorial Fund, Box 374, Lumden, SK S0G 3C0.
