Obituary of Betty Eleanor Hailstone
Hailstone- Betty Eleanor, of Regina, died April 5, 2007, at the age 82. Predeceased by her parents Charles & Annie Hailstone, brother William Hailstone in WW II and brother-in-law Russell Barlow. Leaving to celebrate her life: Sister Marjorie Barlow, "Her Boys - nephews Bill (Penny) Barlow and Burns (Bev) Barlow; great nephews and nieces - John (Louise), Stephen (Trina), Todd and Rob (Natasja) Barlow; Keir Dripps, Kym (Jason) Smale, Kyla (Dave) Bussiere; great great nieces and nephews - Tylar, Graeden, Kinley, McKenna, Spenser, Taylor, Emily & Dylan; Extended family Dona Barlow & our dear friend Eleanora Szumack. Cousins in England. Special pet friends Tigger, Sal & Mickey. Born in Ceylon, SK. Educated in Ceylon, Sacred Heart Academy & Balfour Technical School, Regina. Graduated from the Grey Nuns Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. Attended the University of Saskatchewan (received Diploma in Nursing Service Administration) and University of Western Ontario (received B.Sc.N). Following graduation in 1945 was employed at St. Peters Hospital, Melville, SK and at Kelowna General Hospital, Kelowna, BC. Betty returned to Regina and was on staff at the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital/Pasqua Hospital from Feb 2, 1949 until her retirement, as Assistant Administrator, on Jan 29, 1988. Betty served on many community organizations: R.G.N.H Alumnae; Catholic Nurses Association; Catholic Family Service Board; VON Home Care Advisory Committee; Regina Community Home Care Program; Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association; Saskatchewan Health Care Association; Sask. Association of Health Service Executives; Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home; Regina Palliative Care Inc. (which Betty was instrumental in establishing); Pasqua Hospital Auxiliary; Catholic Health Council of Saskatchewan; Academy Housing Association Inc.
Betty received several honors during her career: Life Memberships in Sask. Health Care Auxiliaries, Canadian Association of Health Care Auxiliaries, Sask. Association of Health Care Executives, Sask. Health Care Association & Sask. Registered Nurses Association; recipient of Smith-Walshaw Award in 1987; Canadian Volunteer Certificate of Merit in 1990; Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in Jan. 2006. Betty enjoyed her many associations in her employment and community activities. She considered herself most fortunate in being associated with some very dedicated and excellent people in the health care field and was always thankful for the life long friendships of these people. A sincere and special thank you to the following: The Doctors, Nurses & Staff of Palliative Care Unit @ Pasqua Hospital, the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of the entire Pasqua Hospital that Betty worked with over her long carrier and that cared for Betty the last few months, Dr. Stephen Bester & Dr. Lawrence Clein. The ladies at Cathedral Courts & the caregivers from Dove Care Homes. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. A nurse first - last - and always, she was the ultimate care giver whose goal was to ensure that anyone that came through the doors of the Pasqua Hospital was given the best care possible. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Rosary Cathedral, 3125 - 13th Ave. Regina, SK. on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev Msgr. Ken Miller, Celebrant and Rev. Louis Kubash, Concelebrant. Cremation - interment of ashes in Ceylon Cemetery at a later date.
