Obituary of John Melnychuk

MELNYCHUK - On Sunday, June 17, 2007 John Melnychuk passed away at the age of 84 years. He is predeceased by his mother, Helen (nee: Lena Woluschuk), father George, brothers Steve, Nick and Bill as well as his sisters Mary Vass and Eva Bieber. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Glenna, son Frank (Corean) of Ladysmith, BC and daughter Beverlee Brewer (Ervin Wolfe) of Weyburn, SK. Also left to mourn his loss are his wonderful grandsons: Aaron Melnychuk of Stettler, AB, Gregory (Erie) Melnychuk and baby daughter Tara of Edmonton, AB, Jeffrey (Amber) Melnychuk of Millet, AB and Stefan Brewer of Weyburn, SK. John is also survived by one brother, Alex, of Yorkton, SK. John was born April 2, 1923 near Sheho, Saskatchewan where he enjoyed his rural up-bringing immensely. Grandpa fondly recalled many memories of growing up on the prairies in the thatched roofed house, the one room school house, baseball and the vibrant community spirit. John proudly served his country during WWII in the postal corp from 1939 to 1946. He was stationed in France, Italy, Germany and England. Upon returning home, John briefly owned and operated a country store and mail outlet and later he and Glenna farmed. After moving to Regina in 1957, John worked at Inland Cement Ltd. until his retirement at age 65. In retirement, John was busier than ever with his grandchildren and family and gardening. He was an active member of St. Michaels Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Regina and the Ukrainian community working endless hours at UNF and Mosaic. The family wishes to extend their sincerest thank you to the team from the Pasqua Palliative Care Unit and Palliative Home Care team, Dr. Clein, Dr. Pacella, Dr. Bridgen and the staff at the Allan Blair Cancer Center. Prayers will be held on Friday, June 22, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 2075 McDonald Street with Rev. Brent Kuzyk presiding. Flowers gratefully declined.
