Obituary of William Roy Matheson

THE HON. WILLIAM R. MATHESON, Q.C. William Roy, born November 14, 1930 in Prince Albert, SK, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012 in Regina, SK. Bill had struggled health wise recently after a fight with cancer 12 years ago and a stroke several years ago. He was predeceased by his parents Col. Foster M. and Beatrice Matheson, his brother Donald G. Matheson and nephew Duncan Matheson. William is survived by his wife Margaret Joan; sons, Garth, Bruce (Pat) and Scott (Vancouver, BC); daughter Alison; grandsons, Dallas and Thomas; great grandson, Silas; sister Joan Whiteley (Qualicum Beach, BC); sister-in-law, Patricia (St. Catharines, ON); nephews, Hon. Russell MacKay (Chilliwack, BC), Douglas Matheson (Saskatoon, SK); nieces, Janet MacKay (Cloverdale, BC) and Lisa Matheson (St. Catharines, ON). Bill spent two years at Prince Albert Collegiate Institute, graduated City Park Collegiate Institute, 1948; B.Comm, University of Saskatchewan, 1952; commissioned Lieutenant Canadian Infantry 1950; LLB (Cum Laude) University of Saskatchewan in 1957. Bill joined MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman in 1957 and was appointed Queens Council in 1976. He served as Chairman Regina Branch Canadian Institute of International Affairs 1970 - 72; Bencher, Law Society of Saskatchewan 1978 - 79; Director, Assiniboia Club 1980 - 82; Director CAA Saskatchewan 1990 - 2002. He was appointed Justice of the Saskatchewan Court of Queens Bench in 1982 and Justice of Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada in 1994, and retired from both courts November 2005. Bill returned to MacPherson, Leslie & Tyerman LLP as Counsel in 2006 until his passing. In lieu of flowers, friends so wishing may make a donation to the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan, 15 Campus Drive, Saskatoon, SK, S7N 5A6 where an award will be established in Bills name. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Cheryl Zagozeski for the wonderful care over the years and to the staff at the Palliative Care Program. A Memorial Service will be held April 13, 2012 at the Wascana Country Club, Regina. Further details will be published at a later date.
