Obituary of William Steve Hawrylak

HAWRYLAK, William - Bills family is saddened by the passing of their Dad and Grandpa on February 12, 2006. Born in Calgary, February 17, 1914, he moved with his family to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan in 1918 and resided in this province since then. Bill was predeceased by his first wife, Maude in 1975, and his second wife, Millie in 1995. Also predeceasing were his sister Helen and brothers John and Peter. He leaves to mourn his daughters, Lynne, Susan (Pete) Garton, Chris and Michael; and son, Mark (Donna), Paul and Bree. Also surviving are Bills sister Anne, sisters-in-law Irene, Doris and Judith, several nieces and nephews as well as Millies children and grandchildren. Bill was educated in Maple Creek, and received his B.Sc and B.Ed from the University of Saskatchewan. Following his initial two year teaching position in Indian Head, he spent the next 40 years teaching in Regina at Scott Collegiate, Balfour Collegiate, Martin Collegiate and finally as Principal of Thom Collegiate. His familiar "turn around and get to work will be fondly remembered by many of the students he taught. His aim with a piece of chalk was also renown. He retired from teaching in 1978 and then served for six years on the Board of Education. In 1988, Bill was both proud and humble when the Regina Public School Board acknowledged his contribution to education in Regina by naming W. S. Hawrylak Elementary School in his honour. He loved to visit the school for concerts, graduations and especially his birthday celebrations. He followed all the happenings within the school with great interest - go Hawrylak Huskies!! Some of his accomplishments: winner of the Individual World Junior Grain Judging Championship at the Worlds Grain Show in 1933 in Chicago, received the Queens Silver Medal for outstanding contribution to education in Saskatchewan, life member of the Saskatchewan, Western Canada and Canadian Bowling Associations, statistician for the Western and Canadian Football Leagues (1950-1967) and Saskatchewan Roughriders (1970-1984), life member of the Canadian Club, Gyro Club member since 1983, and long time congregation member of All Saints Anglican Church. The respectful and caring manner in which staff at Sunset Extendicare looked after our Dad during the past two years was most appreciated. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 17, 2006 at All Saints Anglican Church, 142 Massey Road, Regina with Father J. Buenting officiating.
