Obituary of Roy George Victor Waller

ROY GEORGE VICTOR WALLER May 24, 1920 March 21, 2013 A dedicated husband, father, Papa and loyal friend, Roy passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 21, 2013 after a brief illness. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons Tom (Flora) and Bob (Sherlyn); grandchildren Marnie (Graham), John (Erica), Scott, Brittany, Jessie, Kyle, and Eric; sisters-in-law Marg, Molly, Elaine, Vi; brother-in-law John (Yvonne); and numerous nieces and nephews. Roy was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Alice; parents, Jessie and John; brother Bob; sisters-in-law Catherine, Lil and Betty; brothers-in-law Michael, Malcolm, George, Ollie, Ronan and Henry; special niece Carol and special nephew John. Roy volunteered with the Army in September of 1939 and was discharged from the Air Force in September of 1945 with the rank of Flight Sergeant. Upon his return to Regina he began a long and distinguished career in the Co-operative movement. He was instrumental in the early development of commercial insurance services through Co-operative Fire and Casualty Company and in the merger of co-operative insurance organizations to form the Co-operators. At his retirement, he was Senior Vice-President of the organization. In 1980, with the arrival of his first grandchild, Papa Roy retired from the Co-operators although he continued to remain active in the insurance industry as a member of the Board of Directors of SGI. Roy was a man on the move, never one to sit still for long. He always found something to do whether it was attending sporting events, dance recitals, banking, running errands, working in the yard or trying his luck at the Casino. He was always busy. Roy was devoted to his wife, Alice and was her primary care provider until her death last year. He was very proud of his grandchildren and attended their games, concerts and recitals. Never one for small talk, Roy had a clever wit and dry sense of humour which he maintained to the end. He was an engaging conversationalist on the news of the day, politics and sports. Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and social workers in CCU, CSU and 3F at the Regina General Hospital with special thanks to Dr. A. Ellwood for her dedication to keeping Roy comfortable and providing the best care possible. Thanks also to special niece, Kathy Kyle for her support. At Roys request there will be no funeral. A private family farewell is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that a donation be made to a charity of the donors choice.
