Obituary of Helen Gladys Fenwick
FENWICK - Helen G. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away April 7, 2006, one month before her 94th birthday. Predeceased by her husband Earl in 1984, her daughter Marlene in 1988, and her four brothers Walter, James, Gordon, and Albert Van Moorlehem, Helen is survived by her daughter Gailene, her son Dennis, grandchildren Joanne and Catherine Massig, Patrick, Marie (Sean Embury), Louise, and Andrew Fenwick, and great-grandchildren Liam and Declan as well as several nieces and nephews. Born in Keeler, Saskatchewan on May 7, 1912, she moved to Regina in 1929 where she enrolled in a secretarial and bookkeeping course at Reliance School of Commerce. Upon completion of the course, she worked for a time at W.B. Riley Ltd. before marrying Earl Fenwick on September 5, 1932. For decades Helen was an active volunteer in Regina and in the province. She took an active interest in education, serving as a member and on the executive of the Saskatchewan Federation of Home and School Associations from 1945 to 1960. In addition she served on the Advisory Committee on Teacher Training (1957 - 1961), on the Advisory Committee on Curriculum Planning (1957 - 1961), and on the first board of directors of the Harrow de Groot School. Helen was a longstanding member of the Byng of Vimy Chapter of the IODE and served on the executive in various capacities from 1947 to 1962. She was a lifetime member of the Saskatchewan Anti-Tuberculosis League and worked on three TB surveys conducted in Regina in 1952, 1962 (Chairperson), and 1967. These contributions and her many others to the community led to a street in Regina being named after her. An avid and talented golfer in her younger years, her name is inscribed on the Regina Golf Clubs Simpson Golf Cup. Helen has owned a cottage at Lumsden Beach for over five decades and spent every summer there until 2001. She walked for miles and miles up and down the hills as well as along the CPR track bed. She was a familiar figure as she headed out to collect wildflowers to press for her note cards or to pick berries, often in patches known only to her. All of us will miss you. Your positive attitude, your independent spirit, your zest for life, your curiosity about and appreciation for the natural world, your caring - all are an inspiration for us. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, with Rev. Kenneth Powers officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. An on-line book of condolences may be signed at www.speersfuneralchapel.com
