Obituary of Sister Mary Hagerty

SISTER MARY HAGERTY Sister Mary died peacefully at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home, Regina, on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 on her 97th birthday! Born in Annaheim, SK in 1915, Sister was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Ellen Genevieve (Gillespie) Hagerty, her sister Catherine (Martin) Dauk, and her brothers Walter (Clara) and Thomas (Marie). She is survived by many nieces and nephews, even to the 4th generation. In 1932 Mary joined the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions where she was given the name Sister Mary St. Oliva. After taking her teacher training, Mary began a long teaching career, twenty-one years in Lebret Public School, ten years in Manitoba, four in St Eustache and six in Elie. For most of those thirty-one years she was principal of a 12-grade school. In 1967, Mary returned to Regina where she taught for fourteen more years at Miller Composite High School. During the first twentyeight years of that time Sister, by attending summer classes at universities, and taking correspondence course at home, obtained her B.A., B.Ed., and M.A. as well as directing school and church choirs, drama, Red Cross club, supervising sports activities, organizing graduation exercises, and carrying out various responsible roles in her community of Sisters. In 1981, Mary superannuated from teaching but for another seven years worked as a volunteer at Alta Vista High School, a school for emotionally disturbed youth from Bosco Homes. By 1988 Sister had taken on some less onerous tasks, visiting and ministering to the sick, keeping telephone contact with elderly friends, and sharing in-house? duties. By 2004, she was ready for more complete retirement and moved to the Sisters Residence at Santa Maria, where she became a patient the following year. Sister was much-loved and respected by her Sisters and students. She always remained close to her family, brothers and sister, nieces and nephews of all generations looked to her for guidance, affection and much good conversation. The Hagerty and Dauk families and Marys Sisters in religion are most grateful for the gracious and loving care given to Sister Mary during her time at Santa Maria.
