Obituary of Hazel Nellie Kattler
KATTLER - Hazel Nellie (nee Berenson) - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Hazel Kattler on Friday, February 25, 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by husband, Albert, and daughters, Sandra (Jim) Carton of Penhold and Dianna Waffle of Regina, as well as grandchildren, Adena Waffle of Vancouver, James Carton and Deanna (Miles) Bara of Red Deer, Cherie (Len) Lamb and Vickie (Bob) Bailey of Penhold, seven great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Marjorie, Belle, Addie, Margie (Cecil), Daisy and Doris, numerous cousins both in Canada and Norway and many nieces and nephews. Hazel was predeceased by her parents, Nickolai and Helga, sister, Ida, and brothers, Ed and Otto (Red) plus numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Hazel met Albert, the love of her life, in the winter of 1938 and they married on May 18, 1940 spending the next 65 years together with the only exception being 1943 - 1946 during the Second World War when Albert was overseas. That lengthy separation was difficult for both of them. The year after returning to Canada Albert and Hazel bought a small farm north of Regina where they continued their married life and started their family. In 1951 Albert re-enlisted in the air force and they were off to a life of meeting new people, making new friends and living from Greenwood, Nova Scotia to Comox, British Columbia. Following each move Hazel would quickly make the new house "home and we would all very soon settle in to the new environment. Family and friends have always come first with Hazel and she made each transition easy for the rest of us. The years went by very quickly and in 1965 the family returned to Regina following Alberts retirement. Hazel then took up a career and started working at the Hudsons Bay Company the year it opened in Regina. She again made many new friends and maintained several of them following her own retirement. Albert and Hazel enjoyed many winters together in Las Vegas, Nevada with Dad playing the slot machines and Mom relishing the warm sun on her face. Moms gift was her fun loving nature and deep caring for other people. We extend our love and gratitude to Dr. Alibhai for her very special care of Mom over the years and we would also like to thank the doctors and staff at the Allan Blair Cancer Clinic, the Palliative Care Units at the Pasqua Hospital and the William Booth Special Care Home. Pastor Bob Leeson will conduct a private interment which will be followed by a Memorial Service at Speers Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, March 1st at 1:00 p.m. Visitation for family and friends at Speers Funeral Chapel on Monday, February 28 at 7 p.m. Flowers most gratefully declined. Friends so wishing may make a donation in Hazels memory to the Wascana Grace Hospice at the William Booth Special Care Home. Condolences to the family may be emailed to reception@speersfuneralchapel.com
