Obituary of Doris Ilene Solomon

DORIS "CHUCKIE SOLOMON - November 24, 1911 - March 25, 2005 was predeceased by her husband, Dr. George C. Solomon; her parents Charles Henry and Mary Elizabeth (Lowe) Dean; five brothers; three sisters; and her twin sister Dorothy McNaughton. She is survived by her sisters Helen (Gus) Wingert of Regina and Kathleen Sebok of Weyburn and their families; as well as many nieces and nephews throughout the United States and Canada. Her parents were immigrants to Saskatchewan one hundred years ago and a deep faith in Gods providence defined the lives of each member of the Dean clan as they struggled to survive farm failures, job loss and the death of two infant children. Those early years at the farm gave free rein to Chuckies love for horses and her years at Wetmore School in Regina saw her excel at sports. Later that accomplishment fostered a passion for curling and an exercise regimen that would last well into her senior years. The high spirited and very pretty young Chuckie loved to sew her own very stylish outfits and she caught the attention of the young and handsome son of a Romanian immigrant and his Ukrainian wife. George Solomon swept her away from a very promising career in the printing business. They were married in 1932 and following a courageous but unsuccessful coal mining venture in Northern Alberta, they returned to Saskatchewan with some clothing and just one truck, in time to face the great depression years together. This life partnership was augmented by three and the single truck emerged a thriving equipment business the first of a widely recognized Canadian business empire. Chuckies years were spent as a very supportive wife and a devoted mother to her three daughters, Sharon, Vaughn and Adrian. Her passion for interior design developed and one of her showcase homes has often been the summer "get away for four generations of her family. Her grandchildren, Shaun (Tricia) Dyksman, Dean (Danielle) Burns, Whitney (Simon) Wignall, Matthew, Blake and Christina Burns, and George Schofield will miss hearing, first hand, stories of their adventurous Grandma during the days of the dust bowl depression when she lay plastered to the hood of Grandpas truck, guiding him through the endless billows of dust. Her great-grandchildren, Antoinette, Adrianna, Pekka and Annika Dyksman, Maren Elizabeth Burns and Alexander Dean Wignall, Im sure, will never tire of the many different versions of the story about how Grandma escaped the grizzly bear in Alberta by hiding behind the cook stove. Most of all, we will remember her telling us to "put God first and He will care for all of our needs. In 2002 Mom was confined to the long term care facility at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre. We, her daughters and families, Sharon (Peter) Dyksman, Vaughn (Gordon) Schofield, Adrian Burns (Greg Kane), gratefully acknowledge and appreciate the care and attention given to our mother by her doctor and long time friend, Dr. Stewart McMillan, the Wascana nursing team and the members of We Care. We salute the dedication and tireless efforts of her long time private nurse, XiaoJuan, as well as the faithful care given by Myrna Pachal. Proverbs 1:8,9 - "Listen my children, to your fathers instruction and do not forsake your mothers teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. (paraphrased). The service will take place at Living Hope Alliance Church, Hwy. #33 East on Friday, April 1, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. A visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, March 31st from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina.
