Obituary of Dr. Werner Paul Wohlfarth

WERNER P. WOHLFARTH Dr. Werner Paul Wohlfarth, age 89, died on July 21, 2005, in Regina, after a lifetime of contributions to his adopted country, province, and community. He was predeceased by his wife of forty years, Joan, in 1986, and by his younger brother Henry of Watertown, NY in 1991. Werners death is mourned by his two daughters, Susan Jasper of North Vancouver, BC and Ursula Wohlfarth of Calgary, AB, and his two sons, Peter Wohlfarth of Quesnel, BC and Anthony (Tony) Wohlfarth of Ottawa, ON. He will be remembered by his six grandchildren, Christopher, Jocelyn, Benjamin, Maggie, Lauren and Robin, and three in-laws, Paul, Terri, and Lynn. Werner also is survived by a remarkable cousin Madi Wreschner of Milton Keynes in the UK and his dear friend Eileen Liebrecht of Melville, SK. Werner was born in Mannheim, Germany on September 21, 1915. Forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1933, Werner enrolled in Medicine at the University of London (Middlesex Hospital) where he graduated in 1940. He met Joan, a registered nurse, when he interned at the Billericay Hospital in East Sussex. Werner served with the Emergency Medical Service during WW II, and married Joan in 1946. In 1952, they immigrated to Saskatchewan with their two young daughters. They first lived in Lipton, where Werner was the municipal doctor, and Peter was born at the Balcarres Hospital in 1954. In 1955, they moved to Melville, where Tony was born in 1956. In Melville, Werner and Joan raised their four children and served their community with distinction. Werner was the town coroner, alderman for 15 years, member of the hospital board and active in the Order of the Elks, St. John Ambulance, and the Rotary Club. Werner was elected President of the Saskatchewan College of Physicians and Surgeons. Joan was Girl Guide Leader for 20 years, organized blood donor clinics and was Leader-Post correspondent from 1968 until her death in 1986. Werner retired from the practice of medicine in 1981, and remained active in gardening, travelling, financial planning and his love of classical music. In his later life, Werner moved to Regina and was well cared for by the excellent staff at Queen Victoria Estates and Kelsey Personal Care Home and at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre. Werners last voyage and wish was to be buried in the family plot at the Jewish Cemetery in Watertown, NY beside his parents and brother. Interment took place there on July 24. The family will sit Shiva at the residence of Tony Wohlfarth in Ottawa. Memorial contributions can be made to a scholarship in family medicine that the family is establishing at the University of Saskatchewan. Condolences to the family may be emailed to reception@speersfuneralchapel.com
