Obituary of Hughie Arnold Atwell

Hugh Arnold Atwell passed away peacefully at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, Veterans ward on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, with his family by his side. Hugh was born on February 7, 1928 in Newtonville, NS. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Dorothy; his wife Leona; second wife Anastasia; and brother Dempsey. Hugh is survived by his common law wife Gwen; his children, Wayne of Regina, Deborah (Ken) Froh of Regina, and Mark (Christine) of Calgary; sister Shirley (Pierre) Principi of Montreal; brothers, Asie of England, and Avery of Nova Scotia; grandchildren Trent (Barb) Atwell, Andrew Atwell, Kristine (Les) Horvath, Shawn (Danielle) Kreutzer, Josh (Karen) Froh, Nathan Froh, Colin (Sherri) Hewett, Angela (Sheldon) Valleau, Jesse (Samantha) Atwell, and Allison (Ryan) Atwell; 18 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Hugh served in the Korean War, after which he continued his military career in Chilliwack and Esquimalt, BC; Camp Borden, ON; Whitehorse, YT; Regina and Moose Jaw, SK; and Shearwater, NS; as well as Cyprus in the peacekeeping core. Hugh received his journeyman carpentry certificate and technical engineering degree while still in the service and then went on to work for Sask. Department of Health where he travelled extensively throughout Saskatchewan designing and upgrading hospitals. In Hugh’s younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing and later on he took up golf which became his passion. We would like to thank the Helping Hands Care Home and the Veterans ward at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre for their compassionate care. There will be a private family service in Regina followed by an interment in Chilliwack, BC.
