Obituary of E. May McKay

Ethel “May” McKay was the first child of Roy and Ethel Johnson. She was born in their Winnipeg home December 7, 1914 and after a happy and fulfilling life completed her earthly journey on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, in Regina, at the age of 98. May married Neil McKay on August 16, 1939. Neil predeceased her on September 21, 1981. She was also predeceased by her parents and brothers Harry and Doug. May is survived by her children, Dr. Roberta McKay (Elmer Brenner) of Regina, Ian McKay (Jaye Fredrickson) of Edmonton and Sheila (Norman) Achtzener of Regina; her grandchildren Hugh and Stuart McKay of Regina and Lachlan Fredrickson of Edmonton, Christine (Alex) Acevedo of Edmonton, Kevin (Oralia) Achtzener of Edmonton; and her beloved great-grandchildren Alfonso, Neil, Erik, Alicia and Christopher Acevedo and Eva and Owen Achtzener all of Edmonton. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought so much joy into her life and Great Grandma was loved in return. Mum was extremely involved in church and community work up until the age of 95. She was elected a life member of the Saskatchewan Lung Association for her role as a zone captain in the city wide TB survey in 1962 and was involved again in the 1967 survey, with Neil working alongside her. May played for sing-a-longs at Wascana Rehabilitation and Pioneer Village on a weekly basis, as well as at Parkside once a month for many years. She also played for church services at Santa Maria, the Regina General Hospital and Queen Victoria Estates during that time. A special thank you to Dr. Ashis Paul who has provided excellent care for Mum, as well as to family and friends who have remembered her with visits, cards and phone calls. A commemorative gathering will be held at a later date. The inurnment will take place at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery in Regina. Flowers most gratefully declined.
