Obituary of Marie (Mary) George

Marie, late of Sunset Extendicare, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the age of 87 years. She leaves to mourn her daughters Donna Miller and Bev (George) Maxim; granddaughter Suzanne Maxim; brother John (Gladys) Petrar; sisters-in-law Veronica Petrar, Ann Seminuk, Kay George, Mary (Ed) Melnyk and Irene Sather; brothers-in-law Ernie Kurtz and Dan (Mona) George; as well as many nieces and nephews. Marie was born February 21, 1926 at Dysart, SK. She was predeceased by her parents Nicolai and Domnica Petrar; her husband John; grandchildren Stephanie and Robbie; brother George; sister Margaret; in-laws John and Lena George; brothers and sisters-in-law Andy (Mary), Steve, William (Mary) and Ralph. Marie was renowned as a wonderful cook and served a constant houseful of boarders until she was employed at Sherwood Co-op (Regina) serving up great food in the cafeteria for many years. She was a mainstay of the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church, using her gift of hospitality to ensure that fellow parishioners always felt welcomed and never went hungry. We are grateful that some of her most treasured recipes were captured in a family cookbook and had many a laugh with Mom when we were trying to get more exact measurements than ‘a little of this’ to capture the recipes! In addition to her work life, Marie volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Order of Foresters and the Regina Multicultural Council. She was an avid Rider fan, enjoyed watching curling, hockey and listening to country and gospel music. The family wishes to thank the staff at Sunset Extendicare (East Wing) for their compassionate care and the love they showered on Mom during her five year stay. She valued the friendships she made there. Thanks also to Dr. Steven Bester for the weekly visits to provide Mom with the medical support she needed to allow her to enjoy the last years of her life. Visitation will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Friday, October 11, 2013 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will take place at Speers Funeral Chapel on Saturday, October 12 at 10:30 a.m with Reverend Fr. Daniel Nenson officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Memorial Park. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing may make donations in memory of Marie to the Batten Disease Support and Research Association, c/o #202 – 2242 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK S4P 2K9.
