Mayong and I worked on a high school science project we dubbed "Zingiber Officinale Effectively Kills Rice Weevils." Zingiber officinale is the scientific name for the common garden ginger (or luya). Weevils (or bukbok) are those black, pesky, little, crawling insects in stored rice. We took a ginger root to the Bureau of Science and Technology lab and had it tested and analyzed. We wanted to know and identify the specific chemical compound responsible for insect growth inhibition. I don't know how he came up with the idea, but he did, and our work won a Science Fair award.
Last time I saw Mayong was at a small reunion in June of 1999, only a week after you tied the knot. His exuberance was evident and we were all happy for him. His jolly and playful nature, infectious smile, and humor will be sorely missed. I only have fond and wonderful memories of him.
My sincerest condolences to Mary Jane, Patricia, Patrick, and the entire Calvario family.

PART 2:
Our sincerest condolences to you, your kids and the rest of the Calvario family on the passing away of a very dear person. I still remember Mayong during our high school years: he was a funny and witty guy who never failed to make us smile or laugh with his jokes and comments. He would always tease me and pair me off with a classmate of ours, and I smile whenever I think of it now. Believe me, he could be very persistent and intense in his teasing!
Our batch will truly miss him. He was a co-moderator of our batch e-group, in charge of sending out birthday reminders and sharing newsy bits of just about everyone. And now he is the news.
Please know that we will keep you in our prayers and thoughts. God bless you.
Love,
Eney

I worked with Rodel for two years at Jay's. He had a great sense of humour, sometimes dry and I wasn't sure if he was kidding, but many times just outright funny. He cared about his wife and children a great deal, as well as his extended family. I can hardly believe someone so full of life is gone. I wish the family comfort and hope.

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel about the sudden loss of Rodel. I only got to work with Rodel for a brief period in time. But he always made everyone around him laugh and smile no matter what mood they were in. May the love of those around you help you through the days ahead.
