Obituary of Grant Barrick

“We shall be with you in the fellowship of the spirit and surely you will meet some of us as you trudge the road of happy destiny." David “Grant” Barrick was born on December 28, 1935 in Fort Garry, MB. He joined his “higher power" on Sunday, December 29, 2013. Grant is survived by his daughters, Katheryne (Blaine) Fidler and Lynn (Joe) Barrick Loiselle; grandchildren, Genevieve and Xavier; sister Gail Beecher; and sister-in-law Joanne Barrick. He was predeceased by his wife Gail, ever the love of his life and his brother Garth. He was a pioneer in establishing the practice of denturism in Canada. Grant was instrumental in establishing an international education program to certify denturists prior to practice. As much an artist as a craftsman, Grant was an avid gardener and cook. His raspberry pies are the best we have ever tasted! Anyone who visited him in the last two years would have seen the tomato tree from which he ate many a tomato sandwich. Grant could make cars shine and all who knew him knew of his love of cars. He was equally at home with his beloved horses, having learned how to handle and care for horses at the Winnipeg race tracks while a young boy and adolescent. He spoke of his favorite horses right up to the end. Grant spent many happy hours fishing with his buddies and on numerous fishing trips to Northern SK and to ON. A man given to many opinions, Grant was a great conversationalist and loved visiting. If Grant was your friend he was your friend forever. His great loves however were the loves he had for his daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren -- they meant the world to him. In his last years, Grant was often confined to his apartment. However he learned to keep himself busy and as was his habit, taught himself new skills. Grant’s borscht and stew were delicious. He was proud to do his shopping and laundry right to the end, never feeling sorry for himself. A proud member of AA, it is only fitting that his send-off service will be in the style of an open AA meeting. We believe that his many friends in AA already gone before him, will be holding their meeting at the same time, gathering at the door to greet him! Celebration of Grant’s Life will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
