Obituary of Harold Robert Smith

Hal, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the age of 85 years. Predeceased by his sister Min; brothers, Edward and Walter, Hal is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Vi; daughter Robin (Nestor) of Abu Dhabi, UAE; son Scott (Cara) of Sherwood Park, AB; two grandsons, Ryan and Ty; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hal was born on June 21, 1928 in Regina and was a graduate of Central Collegiate. He retired from SaskTel in 1983 after a long and enjoyable career of 36 years. Many knew Hal as “Smitty” as he was active in the community in volunteer work as well as organizing SaskTel functions. He was instrumental in establishing the TransCanada Telephone Curling Bonspiel which held its 50th anniversary earlier this year. The Hal R Smith trophy was established in his honour and is received by the winning team annually. An avid sportsman, Hal was a bowler, curler and handball player in his early days. He was also a Little League baseball coach for seven years. While always a golfer, Hal took up tennis in his 50’s which he played during the winter months. Hal wintered in Palm Desert, California while enjoying his 26 years of retirement. Hal loved a party and loved to dance. With a smile on his face, he was always willing to help others and was a comfort to many over the years. Hal will be missed by family and friends and all the people at Wintergreene and Haven House where he and Vi resided since August 2011. A private family service will be held. Celebration of Life is planned with a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hal’s memory, may be made to Regina Wascana Grace Hospice, 50 Angus Road, Regina, SK, S4R 8P6 or a charity of your choice.
