Obituary of Garry Lloyd Smith

The family of Garry Smith is greatly saddened by his sudden passing on Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Regina General Hospital. Garry was born in Toronto, Ontario and spent his early years exploring the countryside around London, St. Catharine’s, Collingwood and Winnipeg with his family, camping, swimming, fishing, skating and playing hockey. He loved the outdoors and was involved with Cubs and Scouts. He was educated in Fort Garry schools and graduated from St. John’s Ravenscourt and the University of Manitoba. Garry had a successful career which took him to Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Lethbridge where he met and married his loving wife Navee. They moved to Regina where he worked as General Manager at Canadian Linen and Uniform Service until his retirement in 2008. Garry had a wonderful sense of humour and loved a good joke or debate. He was committed to community service, loved hockey, and was passionate about the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He enjoyed his involvement with the Regina Executive Club and discovered his dramatic talent as a cast member in the play “The Trial of Louis Riel”. Garry loved life, his family and friends, work and his dogs. He will be greatly missed by his wife Navee, her children Brendan (Deborah) Blair, Rebecca Blair (Jeremy Livingston); sisters Gail Ellis and Gloria Vaughan; mother-in-law Ethel Herbst; sister-in-law Leanne Kloppenborg; brothers-in-law Neil (Lavonne) Herbst, Arlyn Herbst; nephews Brook Jones, Stefan and Andreas Kloppenborg, Kim (Brandi) Dalton, Sean, Andrew, Austin, Kaden Herbst; nieces Lori Ellis (Bill Haldenby), Leah Jones (Kris Hay), Alyson, Cesalee, Madison Herbst; great nephews Liam Haldenby, Beckett Hay; great nieces Emma Haldenby and Tatum Hay; as well as many cousins and good friends. He was predeceased by his parents Ray and Gwen Smith, brother Gordon, father-in-law Matt Herbst, and sister-in-law Gina Herbst. A liturgical celebration of Garry’s life will be held at Resurrection Roman Catholic Parish, 3155 Windsor Park Road, Regina on Friday, January 10 at 7:00 p.m. A private family interment will take place at a later date in Warner, AB.
