Obituary of James Charles Switzer

Myrna, Michael, Sherie and families are sad to announce the passing of Husband and Father, Jim Switzer on Monday, January 6, 2014. We have lost a good man after a long struggle with ill health. He was predeceased by his parents Gustavus and Mary Switzer; and brother Edgar Switzer as well as aunts, uncles and cousins. Left to cherish Jim’s memory are: his loving wife of 46 years, Myrna; son Michael (Heather) and grandsons Ryan and Jake; daughter Sherie (Stephen) Blayone and granddaughters Meika and Kieryn. He is also survived by brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bob and Carol Day of Avonlea; nephew Rodney Day and family; niece Tracey Mealing and family; niece Carmen Corbett and family; niece Courtney McKay and family; aunt Marj Schweitzer of Vernon, BC; special cousins Marlene (Jerry) Chernick, Lorraine (Ross) Seaman and many other cousins across the country. Jim was born and lived his whole life in Regina. He worked hard to look after those that he loved. He loved his mother and brother and always helped them in their time of need. He cared for his family the best way he knew how and we will always thank him and cherish him for that. Jim worked at Western Clay Products for almost 30 years while supporting Myrna in her teaching career and helping to raise two busy kids. Together Jim and Myrna enjoyed summer vacations driving across the country from Ontario to BC and into the USA. Those were happy times because Jim was happiest behind the wheel of a car. Cars were his thing – new or old. Keeping his car and his kids cars going down the road was important to him. Music and dancing were also things Jim enjoyed. He could do a terrific German Polka or Schottische until all the girls around him were worn out. He also loved to play ball and bowl. His many trophies prove how well he could throw a ball. However, being outdoors was where Jim wanted to be. As a hunter or a bird and animal watcher, Jim was eager to see any creatures that came by our house. Pesky magpies would get the mean end of his pellet gun if they hung around too long and squirrels who hid nuts in flowerpots were not popular at all. He loved his children and grandchildren, however being a man of principles and rules, we all got the “benefit” of Dad’s/Grandpa’s stern looks or reprimands. Being a perfectionist, he only wanted everyone to be their very best. He loved to tease and make the kids laugh and have fun too. We have lost a man who has been part of our lives for what seems like forever. He deserves peace and he has it at last. We know God has opened his arms and welcomed Jim home. A huge thanks to all the Staff on 3-West and 4-West at Pioneer Village. Your compassion and care have helped us through a very difficult journey. May God bless you all. A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at Broadway United Church, 105 Broadway Avenue, Regina on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Reception and interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jim may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550 12th Ave, Regina, SK S4P 3X1 or to Regina Pioneer Village, 430 Pioneer Drive, Regina, SK S4T 6L8.
