Obituary of John Aloysius Kutarna

JOHN A. KUTARNA June 22, 1939 - February 23, 2014 John Aloysius Kutarna passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Regina’s Pasqua Hospital in the company of his family. Predeceased by his wife Vicky; mother Maria and father Jacob; and brothers Henry and Joe; John is survived by his three children Christina (Trent; grandchildren: Madeleine and Lachlan) Theresa (Brad; grandson: Aidan) and Ian (Jill); siblings, Bernice Buehler, Emil (El) and Jake (Loretta); along with nieces, nephews and many friends. John, the youngest of 6 children, was born at home in Regina. Growing up he helped with the family business, played hockey and cheered for the Toronto Maple Leafs. After spending time at the seminary in Toronto, John completed his degree in Education at St. Thomas Moore College, University of Saskatchewan. While his career began in Edmonton, most of his 30 years of teaching Christian Ethics were spent in Regina at Miller and O’Neill High Schools. John also volunteered many years with the Air Cadet League of Canada where he spent time as the Saskatchewan Provincial Chairman. Upon retirement, John started a small business, Wheels of Wood. By restoring wood-spoked wheels from antique vehicles, this venture allowed him to combine a love of cars with a dedication to fine craftsmanship and attention to detail. In his free time, John enjoyed fly fishing for trout in the creeks and streams of Saskatchewan’s southwest; a passion shared with his brothers and passed on to his children. John was also a regular reader on Saturday and Sunday masses at Holy Rosary Cathedral. He also found enjoyment in the work of local artists. John will be remembered by all for his willingness and ability to fix anything for anyone. Most of all he enjoyed working on old British cars; Minis and Triumphs, at one time, acting as resident mechanic for the Kutarna family fleet of Minis. Prayers will be held at Holy Rosary Cathedral, 3125 13th Avenue, Regina on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Cathedral on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with the Very Rev. Lorne Crozon, VG presiding. Donations in memory of John may be made to a charity of your choice.
