Obituary of Carman Beatty

After a short illness, Carman passed away on March 10, 2014. The third youngest of 10 children, he was born to William (1890-1947) and Mary Winnifred Beatty (1898-1980) in Fleming, SK in 1931. He was predeceased by siblings Elwood, Donald, Helen, Hubert, Marie and Gary, and is survived by Harold (Jan), Donella and Vera. After graduating high school, Carman joined the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. He spent his entire career with CIBC, rising through the ranks to hold several senior positions that saw him stationed in Virden (MB), Kindersley, Humboldt, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Prince Albert and Regina. While working in Regina in the mid-1950s, Carman met Phyllis Jaques who was executive secretary to the downtown branch manager. Phyllis and Carman married on August 17, 1957, and had four children: Gregory (Regina), Michael (Toronto), Brenda (Quebec City) and Michele (Victoria).A long-time Saskatchewan Roughrider fan, Carman also enjoyed watching the Toronto Blue Jays. As an athlete himself, he played baseball, bowling, golf and curling. After retiring in 1989, Carman and Phyllis moved to Parksville, BC. The clement weather enabled him to indulge his interest in gardening and he took great pride in his flowers, fruit trees and lawn. He also kept a horse named Smoky which he enjoyed riding along forest trails outside Parksville. Following the birth of their first grandchild Aaron; to Michele in 1993, Carman and Phyllis moved to Victoria. In succeeding years they welcomed five more grandchildren: two boys (Benjamin and Joshua) to Michele and John Harrison; and two girls (Aimee and Malorie); and a boy (Julien) to Brenda and Sylvain Dion. While in Victoria, Carman and Phyllis were kind and generous hosts to their children and grandchildren during annual summer gatherings, where family members occupied themselves with trips to nearby beaches, walks along scenic trails, and visits with Carmanís extended family. Following Phyllisís death in May 2010, Carman returned to Regina, where he enjoyed reconnecting with other CIBC retirees. Carman spent two years at College Park Retirement Residence before moving to Parkview Villa in August 2012. In October 2013, he transferred to Extendicare Parkside, and the family would like to thank staff at each facility, along with Pasqua Hospital ward 3D, for the care and attention they showed Carman. A Memorial Service is planned for August, and donations in Carman's name can be made to Regina Therapeutic Riding Association (P.O. Box 474; Regina S4P 3A2).
