Obituary of Andy Koon-Wah Chan
ANDY KOON-WAH CHAN
1940 - 2014
It is with sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Andy Koon-Wah Chan on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at the age of 74. Andy is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Catherine (née Lee); four daughters, Monica (Tom) Strauss of Toronto, Odelia (Alister) Chieng of Calgary, Elita (Jason) Yaeck of Edmonton and Lareina Chan (engaged to Christopher Smith) of Regina; as well as six grandchildren, Kyler, Merrick, Madeleine, Alicia, Priya and Kiana, who were his pride and joy. He was predeceased by both parents; two brothers; and one sister. Andy has one surviving brother in Regina Koon-Lai (King) along with two other brothers and one sister who reside in China. Andy is also blessed with numerous nieces and nephews who love their Uncle. Andy left Guangzhou, China for Hong Kong in 1955 and then immigrated to Canada in 1966, working in various restaurants and honing his culinary skills until he retired in 2008. He was very proud of his last restaurant, Pearl River Kitchen on Hill Avenue. Andy was a hardworking man and passed down his work ethic to his daughters who were often found at Pearl River helping out. He was always grateful for his loyal customers and often knew them by name and order! In his spare time Andy loved to paint, watch CFL football, and breed goldfish. Once he retired, Andy began to travel the world with Cathy, practice tai-chi and play ping pong where he developed many close friendships with those around him. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife and family, especially his grandchildren who will miss their “Gong-Gong” very much. Andy’s warm smile, fabulous sense of humour, and ability to make everyone feel welcome will be greatly missed. Visitation will take place at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Friday, June 20, 2014 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in Andy’s memory, may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 279 – 3rd Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK, S7K 2H8.
