Obituary of Nell Hoium

NELL HOIUM (MANDZUK) 1925- 2012 With hearts broken to lose her but with pride to cherish her as our mom, grandma and great-grandma, we share the news of Nells sudden passing on the morning of Friday, June 29 at home. Nell was born in Winnipeg on November 6, 1925 to Mary and William Mandzuk, one of their eight children. After working in Eatons as a young woman, Nell married Thor Hoium in 1950 and moved to Weyburn. Nell and Thor welcomed children Laurie, Linda and Don in Weyburn. Nell and her family then settled in Saskatoon in 1961, where Sandra was born. Once seeing her children through their early school years Nell was employed as a Catering Supervisor at the Centennial Auditorium and as a popular cook at the Co-op Cafeteria. Since 2002 Nell has made her home in Regina where she lived with independence and much happiness. The focus and joy of Nells life was her family. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the recipients of her love and wisdom, pride in their accomplishments, chocolate chip cookies, raisin bar, chili, relish, soups and cinnamon buns. Family gatherings made Mom happiest, and she was at the center of each with helping hands, laughter and stories. Friends, neighbors and family were always welcomed into her home with a cup of tea, a snack, a good visit and a tour of her lovely flower garden in summer. Nell was predeceased in 1982 by Thor, her loving husband of 32 years. She will be missed by her children Laurie (Erv) Hudyma, Don Hoium (Leanne Smithson), Linda (Brian) Slorstad, and Sandra Hoium-Sinclair (Brian Sinclair); her grandchildren Thoren, Andrew, Blair, Sasha, Christine, Jordan and Arden; and great-grandchildren Reyna, Jade, Jemini and Riley; her sisters Mary and Donna; and nieces and nephews in Weyburn, Winnipeg and Toronto. A Celebration of Nells Life will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Those so wishing, may make donations in Nells memory to the Girl Guides of Canada, 801 Preston Avenue, Saskatoon, SK, S7H 2V1.
