Obituary of Edna Joyce Marie Black

Edna (Joyce) Marie Black was born on February 8, 1926 to Gordon and Alice Archibald in Craik, Saskatchewan. After the depression, she moved with her family to their homestead at Garrick. Joyce attended the Kelsey School along with her brothers and sister and the numerous neighbour children where Aunt Gertrude was the original teacher. The school also doubled as a place of worship every second Sunday during the summer months. Joyce met her love Harold Black while he was home on leave from the army. They were married on November 20, 1948. From the marriage four children were born, Robert on August 24, 1952, Thomas on December 12, 1954, Donald on February 21, 1958 and Betty-Lou on October 23, 1959. The Family farmed 9 miles north of Garrick until 1960 when they moved to Botany District. Joyce was always active in the farming, especially when Harold was working away to compensate the income. Long days working the land and then tending to the cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys were normal for Joyce. Joyce left the family farm in 1983 and moved to Nipawin where she worked for Home Care. She touched so many people with her love and kindness in her profession. Joyce loved animals of all kinds, from birds that she would watch out of her window, to horses as her beloved Trigger. Always showing her gruff side, most people never knew her tenderness. She was a very proud of her four children and cherished them dearly even though she did not always show it. Joyce was very strong willed and did not hesitate to voice her opinion with special words - her sense of humour was very different. Joyce was predeceased by: husband Harold Edward James Black; grandson baby Michael Black; granddaughter Michelle Scarf; parents Wesley Gordon Archibald and Alice Elizabeth (McKay) Archibald, sister Ida (Archibald) Black and brother-in-law Leo Black; brother Hugh Archibald and sister-in-law Doris Archibald, brother Willis (Wink) Archibald and sister-in-law Doris Archibald, brother Walter (Barney) Archibald and sister-in-law Joan Archibald, brother-in-law Lloyd Black and sister-in-law Lois Black, brother-in-law Carol Black, and brother-in-law Irvine (Slim) Black. Joyce is survived by: children, Robert (Brenda) Black of Craven, Tom (Linda) Black of Nipawin, Don Black (Tracy Davies) of Regina, Betty Lou Black (Lawrence) of Regina; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; Aaron Scarf (husband of Michelle Scarf); also Joyce’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joe and Bernice Black of Garrick; Joyce’s sister-in-law Isla Black of Nipawin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
