Obituary of Eileen Barron Comrie

EILEEN COMRIE Eileen Munro Comrie, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the age of 89 years. Eileen was born in 1922 in The Pas, MB eventually moving to Swan River with her family where her father purchased the weekly newspaper, the SWAN RIVER TIMES. She was part of a large extended family which included her maternal grandmother, two half-sisters, one brother and one cousin whose parents had died in the 1918 flu epidemic. During her childhood, Eileen was an active athlete in many sports, including speed skating and baseball. Upon completion of high school, Eileen enrolled at the College of Home Economics, University of Manitoba. She attended University during World War II which she recalls as a time of great turmoil for people of her generation. Upon graduation, a significant accomplishment for a woman at that time, she was awarded a coveted internship in Dietetics at the Toronto General Hospital. Her internship was a special time in her life which she recalled fondly. In the late 1940s Eileen met Dr. Clifford Comrie at a hospital in Portage la Prairie, MB and once married they moved to Beachy, SK where Cliff set up a general practice. The one year they spent in Beachy was full of escapades that they both enjoyed recalling and which became an incentive for Cliff to assume a residency in Internal Medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal eventually moving to Regina where Cliff practiced Internal Medicine until his retirement in 1982. As per the times, Eileen did not resume her career as a dietician after the birth of her first son but maintained an active membership in the Regina Home Economics Association. Despite a slow progression of multiple sclerosis Eileen was able to stay involved with curling and tennis for many years. For over 40 years Eileen and Cliff held season tickets with the SK Roughriders which they enjoyed immensely, Cliff in particular. Eileen is survived by sons John (Salina) of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Brian (Jill) of Calgary, AB and daughters Marlie (Brent) of Regina, SK and Tanis (Rob) of Guelph, ON, her grandchildren Aimee, Paul, Elise, Erin, Andrea, Christine, Michael, Kelly, Jon and Samuel as well as her great grandchildren Liam, Aiden and Levi. Eileen was a woman with an admirably strong personality who enjoyed life with her husband, family and many friends. She remains a much loved mother. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the many nurses and caregivers at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home who treated our mother with so much compassion and wonderful care in her final years. As per the familys wishes, a private family service was held. To leave an online message of condolence, please visit www.speersfuneralchapel.com
