I was very saddened to hear of Uncle Elmer's passing. He was married to my Aunt Eleanor and he felt like a 'blood relative' from the day he joined the family! What a wonderful, kind and gentle man he was! As a youngster, I always enjoyed his wry humour, his quiet smiles and the kindness he showed everyone he met. As a teenager and then young adult, I remember his AMAZING gardens! Oh my goodness, what gardens he grew! I reaped the benefit of his green thumb and his generosity more than once when he and Aunt Nor would load me down with extra vegetables from that magnificent garden-these were a true gift to a poor University student and later, a very non-wealthy person just starting in the work force!
In 2003, I married the love of my life, Drew Nelligan, and Uncle Elmer and his 'new' wife Betty accepted our invitation to attend our wedding in Carrot River! I was so happy to see them there, I had not yet met Betty and hadn't seen Uncle Elmer in many years. Sadly, they also attended my husband's funeral in Saskatoon 6 months later and I was sincerely touched that they were there for me then also. Uncle Elmer was a true gem of a man, a kind and gentle soul that made the world a better place. He will be forever in our hearts and terribly missed, until we all meet again.
