Obituary of Helen Loreen Roundy

HELEN LOREEN ROUNDY (nee Parker) Helen passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2013, after a battle with lymphoma. She was born April 7, 1925 in Regina to Howard and Gertrude (nee Weiss) Parker, their second child. She attended Lakeview School where she was greatly influenced by her Grade 4 teacher, Ms. Marion McVeety. Helen graduated from Central High School after serving as the first female ever elected there as Athletic Director. After taking Office studies, Helen started work at Saskatchewan Government Insurance in Regina where she soon moved up to the Executive offices, serving as the presidents secretary for the duration of her career. Being a career girl in those days wasnt generally accepted, and her husband said at the time, YOU tell her to not work!? She was particularly proud of her creation of an SGI 35th Anniversary Cookbook. She and the love of her life, Shelley, were married in 1948 in Regina. Their only daughter, Cheryl, was born in 1958. Helen spent many years supporting Cheryl with her competitive figure skating endeavors including sacrificing her summer holidays for seven years accompanying Cheryl to summer skating schools in such locations as Calgary, Saskatoon, and Vancouver. Helen had a particular devotion to womens softball as a player, manager, coach and booster. Her softball team, the Regina Govins 1954 Womens Softball Team, was inducted into the Regina Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. She managed and later coached the SGI Womens softball team for over three decades. She lobbied City Hall to create what is now the Douglas Park Ladies Softball Park. Upon retirement, Helen took up golf at the Murray Golf Club, curling at the Tartan Curling club, and became a major fan to her grandchildrens many sports activities. In her later years she loved to lunch with her softball, curling, golf and SGI friends as well as spending countless hours on the phone with her sister-in-law, Gwen, critiquing the Blue Jays or any curling on television. Helen was a consummate hostess and was deaf to any refusals to eat from her guests. Until this past year, Helen celebrated New Years Eve with the same group of friends for over 40 years. Predeceased by her parents, Gertrude (nee Weiss) and Howard Parker; her husband Sheldon Shelley? Roundy; her brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Vera Parker; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gwendolyn and Les Joorisity; nephew Wayne (Georgia) Joorisity; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Letitia and Port Roundy. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Roundy and son-in-law Robert Jones and their children Brett, Chelsea and Scott Jones; her nephews Barry Parker, Brian Parker and families; her nieces Lynn (John) Dohie and Gayle Megson and their families; and Georgia Joorisity and family. Special thank you to her cherished neighbors, Bill and Shirley Patterson; to Ross Larden of Palliative Care; to Sonia Bremner and staff of Wascana Heights House Personal Care Home; and to the many friends and family who visited, called and sent notes to Helen during her illness. Funeral Service will be held at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Avenue, Regina, SK on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park.
