Obituary of George Poll

POLL, George

Capt. George Poll (retired), late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at the age of 89 years. Left to celebrate his life are his five children:  Kathy (Lex) Grier [Megan (Matt Nicholson) and Robert (Matthew Kjargaard)]; Mark (Sandra) [Stephen (Renise), Bryan (Kali Hennessey) and Kevin]; Rhonda [Nicole (David) Westerlund and Nathan Mosewich (Miranda Mason)]; Anna (Kevin) Wasiluk [Lindsey, Danielle (Gary Ricard) and Stephanie (Neil Tomaszewski)]; and Georgina (David Doleman) [Geoffrey]; and seven great-grandchildren.  George was born on the family farm in Thierham, Germany on April 24, 1929. He traveled to Canada with his mother Kahtarina (Haunz) and older sister Annie in July 1929 to join his father Georg in Fort Qu’Appelle. The family moved to Macoun, SK in 1932. George’s father passed away in 1935. His widow and six young children had little money and experienced many hardships.   George met his future wife, Gwen Fowell, while in nurses training at Weyburn Hospital in 1951.  George enlisted in the RCAF in July 1952 and entered the officer training program. He and Mom were married in Kelowna, BC on August 3, 1953 and then travelled across country by train to their first posting in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. George became a Navigator and his career took his growing family from BC to the Maritimes and back again. Upon his retirement in 1974 the family moved from Ottawa to Regina so Dad could be close to his elderly mother. He worked at SEDCO from 1974 to 1987 and then with the Canadian Federal Development Bank until his final retirement in 1989. Dad joined Eastview Rotary in 1983, becoming president in 1990-91. He was very proud of his involvement with Rotary and was pleased to receive a lifetime membership in 2013. George loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and his garden. He enjoyed golf, curling and playing bridge well into his 80’s. He was very proud of his Bavarian heritage and made many trips to visit family in Germany. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Georg and Kahtarina; his sisters, Annie, Elsie, Mary Ann, Rita and Freta; and his daughter Agnes (in infancy). He was heartbroken by the untimely death of his beloved wife Gwen in 1994. The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care that Dad received from the staff at Riverbend Crossing Memory Care where he lived since 2013. Celebration of Life will take place at the Speers Family Centre, 2333 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Private interment in Macoun Cemetery will be held on October 6, 2018. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 2550 12 Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1 or the Macoun Cemetery Fund, Box 58, Macoun, SK S0C 1P0.
