Obituary of Albert Carl Mattern

ALBERT CARL MATTERN January 30, 1930 February 5, 2012 It is with great sadness that we share with everyone the news of the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, Albert Mattern at the age of 82 years. Albert passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Regina General Hospital surrounded by his cherished and devoted family. Albert will be greatly missed by his loving and caring wife of 52 years, Eileen. Not to be forgotten, his most precious pet Ginger, who has been his constant companion for the past 12 years. He will also be dearly missed by his children Colleen (Tony) Zarrillo and their children Matthew and Olivia, his son Carmen and Carmens daughter Chelsea. Albert was born on January 30, 1930 in the family homestead in Southey SK to Jacob and Rebecca Mattern, immigrants from Germany and Romania. He grew up as a vibrant and active young boy on the farm making a lasting impression with everyone he met. His hard work ethic that was passed onto him from both of his parents stayed with him throughout his entire life. Alberts love of people, conversation and deal making was the common thread in all of the jobs that he held. From his early days at Glen Wright Trucking, Crown Zellerbach and Canadian Linen Supply (and a few more in between), through to the 35 years selling cars at Regina Motor Products, he was a hard working dedicated employee who paid attention to every detail and made friends with everyone he met. While at Regina Motor Products he was recognized many times as the top salesman of the month and thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie with all of his colleagues. He was also an active member and devoted a great deal of his personal time to the Romanian Canadian Cultural Club and the Capital Cosmopolitan Club. Albert loved the years he spent following his favorite numbers, 1, 3, & 5 at the race track with his friends. He enjoyed the opportunity to travel with his family across Canada and the United States and was an avid sports fan. You would often find Albert spending time outdoors either fishing or tending to his yard. Over the years Albert and Eileen always had an open door policy at their home to their countless friends and relatives where many a polka dance was enjoyed and special occasions were celebrated. During his retirement years he cherished the many visits that he received from so many who stayed in close contact with him. Albert is survived by his sisters, Emma Burghardt of Regina SK and Isabel (Murray) Fleming of Kelowna BC; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Canada. His brothers John and Ernie and sisters Elsie and Carrie predeceased him. Through his deep faith and commitment to the Lord at Grace Lutheran Church Regina we know that he has found a place in his new resting home in heaven. Viewing and Visitation will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 1037 Victoria Avenue on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jeremy Swem officiating. A heartfelt thank you to the nurses and doctors in the CCU at the Regina General Hospital for their compassionate care toward Albert and for his family during his final days. Flowers most gratefully declined, however donations made in Alberts memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of SK, 279 3rd Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK, S7K 2H8 or the Canadian Diabetes Association Southern SK, 917 Albert Street, Regina, SK, S4R 2P6, would be greatly appreciated by the family.
