Obituary of Theresa Degenstein

DEGENSTEIN, Theresa

September 20, 1921 – August 18, 2018

It is with sadness, love, and gratitude that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Theresa, on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the age of 96. Mom was born September 20, 1921 to Balbina and William Kato in Regina, SK. After the birth of Mom’s sister, Margaret, and two brothers, Lawrence and Andrew who both died in infancy, the family moved to the Peace River area. Mom’s sister, Anne was born and her mother died soon after. The three sisters were separated and grew up in different homes. From the age of nine, Mom was raised by her uncle and aunt John and Katie Keleman in the Punnichy area. Mom married Joseph Degenstein in 1947 and together they farmed near Punnichy. Mom had a strong work ethic with unlimited abilities. She excelled at gardening, food preparation, hospitality, and cooking, which were evident during harvest, family gatherings, and community events. Mom was involved in organizations such as the Co-op Women’s Guild, 4-H leader and Catholic Women’s League and was enthusiastically willing to lend a hand wherever needed. Mom and dad travelled to Russia, Australia, Europe, Cuba, United States, and across Canada. After dad passed away in 1992, mom’s deep desire for learning and adventure continued and she travelled to the Panama Canal. Most importantly to mom, was her deep love and concern for her family. She unselfishly placed the needs of others before her own. Mom will be forever loved and missed by her three children, Rod (Sophie), Tom, and Leona (Jack); her nine grandchildren, Todd, Dwayne, Jackie, Trent, Connie, Adam (Kelly), Owen (Lenae), Jared (Breandan), and Kristen (Dave); and her eight great-grandchildren, Benny, Casey, Abby, Aubrey, Oliver, Thea, Connor, and Cody; and many relatives and friends. The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Raymore, SK on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Lunch follows mass before the interment at Punnichy Cemetery. We wish to thank the staff at Parkside Extendicare for the love and care they gave to our mother in the last three years of her life.
