Obituary of Duane A. Powell
Duane A. Powell away peacefully on Thursday, September 20, 2018, with family by his side, at the age of 83 years. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Ellen (2009); parents Harry (1969) and Elva (1996); and his siblings Aurel Joynt (1965), Randall (2006) and Ross (2008). Left to mourn are his loving children Colleen Hamblin (Greg), Laura Znidaric (Sunny), April Powell and Harris Powell; granddaughters Ariel Hamblin (Hal) and Nicole Hamblin; great-grandson Jasper MacGregor; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Duane was born on June 18, 1935 and was raised on a farm outside Rouleau. In his younger years, he worked as a hired hand on neighboring farms. He started a ten year career with CP rail in 1956. Duane then worked various construction jobs during the 1960s, all while helping his father during the farming season. In 1967, he took over the family farm and continued farming for over 30 years until he sold the land in 2005. He met Mary Ellen in 1973. They were married in 1975 and started their life together on the family farm along with Mary’s daughter, Colleen & Duane’s mother. They soon had three more children, Laura, April and Harris. Duane loved country life and classic country music. He was committed to helping neighbors as well as maintaining and improving the homestead. He enjoyed western movies, fabricating items using repurposed farm materials and helping his wife with crafts. Duane always had a nip and a story or inappropriate joke for family, friends, or anyone that would stop in at the farm. He also had a love for animals, from pets to wildlife. Duane will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all that knew him. A special thank you to Duane’s doctors over the years: Dr. Gruszczynski, Dr. Hughes, Dr. Skinner and Dr. Killmurry, as well as the staff at Pasqua Hospital and Regina Wascana Grace Hospice. Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK, on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Regina Wascana Grace Hospice, 50 Angus Road, Regina, SK, S4R 8P6.
