LIESCH, Irene Maria
September 29, 1937 – November 12, 2018
Irene Maria Liesch, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 12, 2018 at the age of 81 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Kalman and Maria Vertes; sons, Larry and Robert; sisters, Editke and Margo; and nephew Tom. Irene is survived by her sons, Tim, Ron, and David; grandchildren, Lisa, Tina, Michael, Sara, Jason, Jordan, Jasmine, Shalisa, Dylan, and Kristin; great-grandchildren, Charly and Edward; siblings, Charles, Emil, Zoltan, and Judi; as well as nieces and nephews, Ramona, Steve, Jeff, Susan, Andrew, Darren, Nadine, and Conrad. Irene was born in Osijek, Yugoslavia (now Croatia) on September 29, 1937. Her family was of Hungarian descent and the family returned to Hungary during Irene’s childhood. After enduring numerous hardships brought on by World War II and subsequent Soviet occupation that culminated in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, the family made the difficult decision to leave their homeland. Irene’s entire family escaped across the border to Austria in 1956, made their way to Paris, and eventually joined an ocean voyage along with hundreds of other Hungarian refugees to pursue a new life of freedom and opportunity in Canada. Irene and her family always maintained their Hungarian language, culture, and traditions as they adapted to their new life in Canada and shared their traditions and cuisine with their friends and children. Irene would continue to work hard for her entire life as she raised four sons while also taking care of people with mental health challenges in her home. Irene started one such group home in Moosomin, SK and then operated another in Regina, SK until she retired at the age of 66 years. Irene was a devoted mother and family member, a diligent and tireless worker and gardener, and a best friend to many she had met during her time on earth. She also loved spending fun times and special occasions with her family and friends always. Irene’s family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Patricia Czaplicki and her son Devan for all of their support, assistance, and love over the years and especially as Mother faced additional challenges in her senior years. Memorial Service will take place at Speers Family Centre, 2333 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park. Family and friends so wishing may make donations, in memoriam, to a charity of choice.
