Obituary of Sister Jean Sutherland

SISTER JEAN SUTHERLAND Sister Jean Sutherland died peacefully after a brief illness in the Pasqua Hospital, Regina on Tuesday, January 8, 2013. Born in Newcastle, New Brunswick on January 11, 1917, Jean moved with her family to Saskatchewan at an early age. Predeceased by her parents Ethel (Harley) and Finlay Sutherland and her brothers Arthur (Dorothy, Kay) and Douglas (Jeanne), she is survived by her sister, Carmel (Wilf) Fletcher; one niece; nine nephews and their children and grandchildren. Jean attended Sacred Heart Academy in Regina and shortly thereafter joined the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions where she was given the name Sister Mary St. Constantine. Sister spent thirty-one years teaching in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It was when she retired from teaching that Jean entered into what proved to be the highlight of her life, working as a chaplain, first at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre in Regina and then at Fairview Home in Brandon. Even into her 80s and no longer able to visit the sick, Jeans concern for others led her to active membership with Friends on the Outside,? a program to support former inmates and their families here in Regina. Sister was just three days short of her 96th birthday when God called her home. May she rest in peace. Funeral Mass will be held at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home, 4215 Regina Avenue, Regina on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Ken Koep presiding. Interment to follow in Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to send a donation to the Mission Fund of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, 310 Provencher Blvd, Winnipeg, MB, R2H 0G7.
