Obituary of Charles Henry Knight
KNIGHT, Charles Henry “Charlie”
Charlie passed away in Regina on Friday, June 28, 2019. He was born on the family farm, near Invermay, SK on June 18, 1927 to parents Harry and Bertha Knight. Charlie came to Regina on August 14, 1945, VJ Day, seeking the opportunity provided by a growing city. In the mid-1950’s he started the Regina Land Development Company and through it developed several of Regina’s largest planned communities, including Whitmore Park and Uplands. Charlie built one of the first grocery anchored shopping centers in western Canada and numerous apartment projects and office buildings, all of which helped to shape Regina’s urban landscape over his 50-year career. Always a modest man, Charlie Knight believed that he should give back to others and to the community that helped him build a successful life. Among other philanthropies, he provided the initial funding for “Chili for Children”, a program providing meals for hungry children in schools, and the initial funding for the “Charles Knight Mentorship Fund”, which brings First Nations teens to Regina to learn how our urban areas and government functions. With his wife Doris, Charlie raised over $18 million for Opera Saskatchewan and he chaired and led the fundraising for the restoration of Saskatchewan House. For his efforts, Price Edward awarded him with the “Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers”. Charlie was predeceased by his wife of over 60 years, Doris McKetsy Knight. He is survived by his brother, Jim Knight of Calgary; two sons, Dennis Knight (Margot) of Paradise Valley, AZ and Bob Knight of Calgary; grandchildren, Jenny Knight Estes (Tyler), Katherine Knight (Matt Suskin), Kacie Beluse Knight (Jeremy), Kelli Knight (Colin Zerff), Kennedy Knight, Emily Knight, and Bobby Knight; as well as great-grandchildren, Everett Estes, Henry Estes, and Charlie Beluse Knight. Charlie was a good and kind man, well-loved during his life, who shall not be forgotten. Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Charlie to Mother Teresa Middle School, 1975 2nd Avenue North, Regina, SK S4R 0Y1 or online http://mtmschoolregina.com/invest-in-us/donate.
