Obituary of Alex Young

ALEX YOUNG February 15, 1941 April 10, 2013 Alex was a great man, loved dearly by his family and missed by all those whose lives he touched. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda; their children Jon (Lois) Young-Hamel, Joanna (Brij) Gulati and Peter (Angie) Young and beloved grandchildren Samir, Kyle, Shaan, Erika and Addington. Alex was predeceased by his parents Alexander and Anne Marie and his parents-in-law Edward and Joan Bennett. Alex devoted his 35 year career to education, first as an English teacher and later as vice-principal and principal. His love of sport and dedication to students took him beyond the classroom to coach football, baseball, basketball, hockey and track. His commitment to developing well-rounded individuals continues to be recognized with the annual presentation of the Alex Young Spirit Award at Thom Collegiate. Alex's energy, enthusiasm and commitment to community led him to volunteer with an array of organizations including Canadian Blood Services; the Pasqua Hospital Patient and Family Advisory Council; the Regina / Fujioka student exchange and the International Ice Hockey Federation. Alex loved music and was a long-standing member of the Sunset United Church choir and sang with the Swinging Souls. He spent his retirement enjoying extensive international travel with Linda. A Celebration of Alex's Life will be held at Westminster United Church, 3025 13th Avenue, Regina on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Allan Blair Cancer Centre, 4101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK, S4T 7T1.
