Obituary of Catherine Alvina Walker
Catherine passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the age of 93 years. She was born at Halbrite, SK on April 21, 1926 to Edward and Mary Rubin. Predeceased by her husband, Marshall; her parents; two brothers, Morgan and Kenneth; two sisters, Helene and Marion; two nephews, Daryl Rubin and Kenneth Coleman; and two nieces, Audrey and Colleen Coleman. Catherine is survived by her three children, Pat (Jim) Hill, Doug Walker and Jim (Bette) Walker; granddaughter Jessica Flaman (Kyle); grandson John Hill (Tess); great-granddaughter Madeleine as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Catherine’s Public and high school education was obtained in Halbrite, Saskatchewan, followed by a secretarial course in Regina. One year later she received her Teacher Education at Moose Jaw, Regina and Saskatoon. Before her marriage her teaching career took place in the Arcola School Unit where she taught at Antler, Stoughton, Wauchope, Arcola and Handsworth. She also held the position of Assistant Superintendent in the Arcola School Unit and Unit librarian. Later, after her children were grown, she spent five years teaching and instructing at the Exceptional School in Oxbow-she had a special feeling for handicapped children. After her retirement she prepared and delivered the weekly Story Hour at the library. Her community volunteer work included Secretary of the Northgate Sewing Circle, of Home and School, of the Recreation Board and of the Oxbow Ladies Reading Club. She was a Charter member of the Oxbow C.W.L.-serving as President and Secretary and other positions. Catherine also taught catechism. Religion and church were important to her all her life. Her hobbies included babysitting, knitting, sewing, crocheting, painting, reading, gardening, spending time with her grandchildren, travel and all the fine arts. Catherine married Marshal Walker in 1951, they lived in Northgate for 12 years, where their children were born and Marshall was the C.N.R. Station Agent. They later lived in Oxbow and Victoria. Catherine leaves a legacy of love of family, education, community service, neighbors, church and compassion for those in need of help. A private family celebration will be held with interment in the Oxbow Cemetery at a later date.
