Obituary of Siegfried Alfred Gerhardt Poppen
POPPEN, Siegfried Alfred Gerhardt
Siegfried, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2019. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Else and by his parents, Hermann and Johanna Poppen. Siegfried is survived by his children Ingrid (Doug) and Alfred (Deidre); by his grandchildren Andrea, Amanda, Douglas and Denika and his great-grandson Nixon. Siegfried made the decision, following the Second World War, to come to Canada and make a better life for his family. He arrived with only a dollar in his pocket. Later Siegfried sent for his wife and daughter. He first took a job working as a miner in a Quebec gold mine. He worked hard, excelling at his studies, in order to attain his engineering certification here in Canada. He went on to build a significant career working as a mining engineer across North America and was proud to share his knowledge with others. Siegfried was devoted to Else. They loved to travel, visiting Florida and Italy many times where hiking in the Italian Alps near Meran was a passion for them. They also loved time spent with family. Siegfried especially enjoyed tobogganing with his grandchildren. He was always active, enjoying skiing, soccer and up to just a year ago, playing table tennis. He had a love for the outdoors which he shared with others, serving many years as a Boy Scout leader. He and Else belonged to the Regina Lawn Bowling Club, a pastime they both enjoyed. In recent years, since Else’s death in 2014, Siegfried once again became actively involved in the lawn bowling club, even organizing a tournament in her memory. The friendship and the support of those in the club have been a very important comfort to him. A gathering to remember Siegfried, and honour his life, will be held at the Speers Family Centre, 2333 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK, on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 3:30 p.m.
